Questionaire

This is a Questionnaire for the BTEC Students so we can see what areas of Media they are interested in.

I will either email to Tim Hammond for the Students to complete, or visit them in person and give it to them to fill out.

BVE 16 th Feburary Broadcast Event

Today I went to Broadcast Video Expo at Earls court 2 to see an event in action. This is a Large Media event which showcases all new technology, equipment and software.

Not only was this very interesting to see the different tutorials and the expensive and high tech equipment, it was so interesting to see how this event worked.

This is different to the Event we will be holding as we will be involving people in certain activities, and here you could go up to whichever booth you wanted to.

What I did take from the event was how the booths that looked really attractive and had welcoming people inside made me much more interested in visiting them. So I think as we will have different rooms for different activities we should dress them all in different styles, have interesting equipment to showcase and to make sure everyone is really enthusiastic.

In the future I want to go to other events to get more inspiration for our own.

IDEA FOR THE EVENT...

Thinking about how the day should be structured heres one idea.

Start :
Welcome and Hellos
Inspirational Talk
Split into two groups: 1 does Photo-marathon and other does filming.
Lunch
Swap over activities
Questions/reflection talk with them
Give them a CD record of the day
Goodbyes

Problems with this:
Photo marathon - the students aren't allowed to wonder by themselves , would be hard to do a photo marathon and keeping student ambassadors with them at all times.

Is the day too bland?

Should the talk be at the beginning - should it be at end instead as a round up.

Would only two activities not have enough coverage of their preferred media.
The media in our uni is:
Photography, Script Writing, Filming, music production, Radio, Graphics, pre production, sound design, editing.

We should look into what they are doing at the moment and link our event to that.
We should showcase as much as possible.

We should get some really relevant guest speakers.

I had an idea which I told to Esther, We should all wear T-shirts and on them have our name and what our 'specialty' is, so if one of the students wants to talk to someone about photography they would know who to go to.

Helen Goldsworthy

Helen Goldsworthy, Widening Participation Coordinator (Aim Higher) came in to discuss the Media Event with us as she has put of Bath Spa Media Events before, and has done so with the same age group we are holding our Event for.

She has held campus visits, school events, 3 day summer schools, and with this knowledge she gave us some tips.

Clear up totally after the event
Book room to have an hour in front and at end to Rig and De-Rig.
Have a black bin bag in each room.
If you upset the support staff they don't let event happen in the future, so be careful.
Talk to the PR department for media coverage - Talk to Peter Cullimore, he would want to see a copy before it goes anywhere.
Tessa Oulton is the head of marketing for prospective students, she would be good to get on board.
Contact marketing for contents of goody bag
A good ply is to give the students the goody bag after they fill in the evaluation form , to make sure it gets done.
Do a test run.

Helen has also said I can contact her with any questions. It is good to know there is someone who has done Bath Spa Events before that I can talk to .

Class 04/02/2011

We looked into Leadership Today.
Who would be a good Leader for our media Event?

Brainstorm of famous Leaders ( Good/Bad/Other):

Churchill, Obama, Hitler, Spielberg, Martin Luther King, Margret Thatcher, Alan Sugar, Donald Trump, Jesus, Desmund Tutti, Murdoch, Richard Branson, Alex Ferguson, The Queen, Gok Wan, Mandela.

...Qualities a Leader should have:

Inspiring, Charismatic, Good communicator, Organiser, Pleasant appearance, Delegator, Confident, Taking control, Strong beliefs, Problem solving, Manipulative?, Clever, speaker, command respect, unity/calm, teams, good posture, body language, authority, Responsible, Fairness, Honesty, Passionate, Integrity, Sincear, Do what they say they are going to do, Openness, being able to listen, take responsibility for their team, if there's a task you don't go to bed till it's done.

We then did a vote for whom should be the Media Event C.E.O.

The Names that came up were Brad , Chloe(me), James, Esther, Mandy.

We then did an activity where we were given a list of people we had to choose to send off on a filming expedition. We had to look at their profiles on paper and choose who would be best as a team to go to film polar bears in the wild.
This was good to test our strengths on putting groups together and compromising on people skills/technical skills etc, this was a fun task , but also made it clear that the teams in the Media Event should be chosen well so we can get the best out of each other for the day.

After this task there was a re vote.

I was chosen to be the C.E.O of the Media Event. I was very excited, but at the same time apprehensive and I don't want to let my class down. I hope I do a good job.

We need to make sure that the Event is varied and there is lots of choice so the all the students are interested in an area/ don’t get bored/ no one feels left out.

Make them feel special - Greeted, ticked off a list, Welcome, drink for while they are waiting.
Make sure they are always doing something and feel involved. Move about but make sure they are supervised at all times- Student Ambassadors ( Have at least 2)
(Smoking Laws : Are they allowed to smoke/ can they smoke on Campus /is it in their collages Rules)

If they arrive early make sure they are not just waiting around... Have a POA.

Give the Students a Schedule so they know what to expect. know when Lunch is.

Who is coming from their collage - Just their teacher Tim Hammond or a assistant as well?

Have a Personality ( Celebrity type )/Professional - this will attract Media and interest Students.

Make a Questionnaire for the students to complete - give us more of an idea what they are interested in.

Go and Visit them before the event, so they know who we are, they can ask us questions.

We have a Budget of £ 200 , do we need to pay personality / food?/Travel/ hiring out equipment. Make sure someone is in charge of Budget.

The Personality - Who can we get? would they be more likely to come for a charity.
LOCAL DREAM BOX:
Skins Cast
Noel Edmunds
Russell Howard

Bill Bailey

The Media - Who can we attract?

Bath Chronicle
BBC
Mayor of Bath
Points West ITV/BBC Local

Red Nose Day / Comic Relief - get them to follow our story.

Sean Geoghegan - Director who helped us with previous project. He could talk to Students about how he got into the job he is in today, and advise for the students.

Could we have a Band playing on the day , this could interest media and Students, we could also use it as an activity to film the band alike to the multi camera shoot we have done in another module.

Use a Green Screen - Tell the weather/Breaking news.
Could We possibly use the Lecture Theatre NE 101 that already has a Green Screen in it.

The planning beggins

Our Project is to create a Media Event for BTEC Media students from Bath College.

Our class was split into 4 groups. I joined Kirsty, Mike, Edem, Tom and Annie.

All the groups were to come up with three ideas each, these are the ideas:

The Big Draw: Huge piece of paper in which they all draw on, create a stop motion piece that they can all watch afterward.
Dual Camera : one would be the animation ( the picture 'becoming'), the other would see the people moving.

Advert: Create an advert for radio or television. Give them a jingle. Let them come up with ideas then create it as a group. Split into 4 groups of 5 so they are all doing something.

The News: Create a News feature and invite people from points west to also give a talk about their profession. The students could present the weather using green screen, others could be part of a filming team in the studio or on location.

Short Film: Making a one or two minute film, certain people from the industry could come and give a talk( e.g. Sean Geoghegan ) to discuss his inspirations and what he does.

Multi camera: 2 camera unit acoustic set, they can all be involved.

Interview: Interviewee Ed Whicher from our class, the student could take roles such as camera man and sound.

Charity:Could tie in the event with red nose day and get the red nose day film crew to film our event to add hype. OR create a charity for our university as the fees are going up this would tie in well and we could possibly create hype and ask famous people to come and join in.

Green Screen: Focus on Green Screen, make a music video. A friend of theirs worked on Coraline with CGI, they could give a talk and a demo.

Dress up film: Dress up as cowboys ad film the stand off, explain how to film it ( e.g. the close up of the eyes) and then let them do it.

Radio Debate: Their aunt is a producer at BBC West she could be a speaker.

Bath Life: Greg can give a talk, put in a magazine article and publish.

These our the ideas we are working on. We need to do research into what the students would want and develop these ideas for the event.

I am excited about the project commencing!
